The 1844-D half eagle is a common coin within the Dahlonega series. The strike is above average on both obverse and reverse. Many specimens of this date have mint-made planchet problems and surfaces that are some what abraded. Original, uncleaned coins have coloration ranging from green-gold to yellow-gold and luster that is usually frosty, but a few pieces exist that are semi-prooflike. Examples of this date can be found with good eye appeal. Less than 250 coins exist with fewer than 5% known in Mint State.
