The 1853-D quarter eagle and the 1852-D quarter eagle are very similar in both overall rarity and high grade rarity. The strike, surfaces, and luster are at best average. Coloration ranges from green-gold to coppery orange-gold. Only a very few specimens of this date have good eye appeal. This date becomes very rare once in the mid-range About Uncirculated grade and higher. Less than 85 coins survive with nine known in Mint State.
