Quarter Eagles 1839 - 1859 Liberty Head 1840-1859
Diameter: 18 millimeters
Weight: 64.5 grains Fineness: .900
Edge: Reeded Designer: Christian Gobrecht

1840-D
Mintage: 3,532

A very rare coin especially in grades of Extremely Fine and better. Most 1840-D quarter eagles are weakly struck and have below average surfaces. Many examples exhibit major die cracks on both obverse and reverse. Most coins of this date have no remaining luster, but a few coins exist with semi- prooflike luster and they are very rare. Original, uncleaned specimens have coloration that ranges from green-gold to coppery orange-gold. The eye appeal on the majority of the coins of this date is below average. There are less than 70 coins of this date surviving with only one Mint State coin known.
